5 Tips for Relocating
5 Tips for Relocating
My assistant has moved a lot and has come from a long line of movers (as in a family that moved a lot). So she thankfully helped create this quick 5 tips for relocating.
You can find a million checklists with a million things to do when it comes to relocating, but you probably already have done the research on the area, schools, jobs etc etc. This day and age, you don’t see many families up and throwing things into a car and traveling into the unknown without some research. Especially with the internet and social media offering so many ways to connect.
These 5 things are what have made every move easy for me and are my key takeaways.
- Pack Non-Essentials. Keep out clothes for 1-2 weeks or keep out the clothes for the season. When we moved to Alaska, we packed up all our summer clothes as we were moving right before Winter. We kept minimal dishes out, toys that would entertain the kids for the trip and for the time being and started three piles. A pile to sell, a pile to donate and a pile for trash. (Keep your receipts from donations for tax purposes)
- Keep all important things OUT. Have a plastic tote handy and keep important documents (birth certificates, social security cards, medical records, passports etc), medications, chargers and all the things you’ll need during the move and immediately after the move. Set aside an envelope with emergency cash in there as well in the event of ANYTHING unexpected happening during the move.
- Ask your realtor or contact at the next location for utilities and all the things you will need to have connected when you move in. Start reaching out and establishing service for your arrival and plan your disconnections for the day of departure.
- Forward your mail and change you address. That included billing address, subscription addresses etc. (Amazon, Netflix etc). Sometimes the forwarding and change of address and can take awhile to take affect and you don’t want to get caught in any trouble with that.
- Plan your trip. I mapped out the entire trip from Arizona to Alaska. I mapped out pit stops, gas stations, hotels and things to do. I made reservations along the way and made sure that we were able to enjoy the trip versus worrying about where we were gonna stay when we got tired.
What are some of your tried and true relocating tips? Share away!
